The Mahogany Coffee Table: Antique, Round, and/or Solid

Posted by on April 30, 2011

The mahogany coffee table is a must have for any home or office with a classic decor style. The wood is very elegant in appearance and can give any room a rich look. This item comes in different shapes and sizes, so it can be matched to existing furniture.

Nothing is more exciting than finding a beautiful antique mahogany coffee table at a shop or on sale. Even a piece that has a rough finish can be made to look new again, as it once did when it was originally created. Shops will often carry desired pieces of furniture. Estate sales are common places to find such a piece. If attending an estate sale or auction is considered, remember to arrive early, so that the piece or pieces being sold can be inspected for condition and wear.

A solid mahogany coffee table typically is very dark in color, with a slight reddish tone. The color is what gives it such a rich look. A gorgeous piece with scalloped trim around the edges will look good with a settee or a couch with a high and curved back.

The round mahogany coffee table is probably the most desirable piece. However, square or rectangular pieces are also widely found. While such furniture usually looks best with traditional or classic decor, there are some new, simpler styles that will look good in rooms with contemporary furniture or decor.

A plainly constructed square or rectangular item with a high gloss urethane protective coating will help maintain the finish, while also drawing attention to a space. Pieces with a simpler design will obviously cost quite a bit less than their fancier counterparts. A plain square or rectangular product can be purchased for less than $100.

Prices for fancier pieces will cost quite a bit more. They can range from $200 to $400. Those highly sought after styles found in shops or at sales may cost as much as $600 or more. If the item is in good shape, with no damage to the finish, paying such a price is perfectly reasonable. Having a few nicks or scratches that are easily removed can be a bargaining point to bring the price down.

Those who do not have time to visit shops and sales may find suitable items in furniture stores with classic pieces. Usually the classic styles will include scalloped legs that gently curve outward. Always inspect the bottom of the piece, as some finishes can look like solid wood, but are made of fiberboard that has been finished to perfection.
